Size Limitations: Height, 14'; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 40'; Motorhome length, 45' but some exceptions and restrictions may apply see http://www.dot.ca.gov; Combined length, 65'. Some instances require a special non-commercial license for towing trailers or fifth wheels and a special endorsement needed for motor homes over 40' in length. Again, see D.O.T. URL above and check out booklet DL648 for RVers.
Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, fire extinguisher in RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes required on trailers with gross weight over 1,500 pounds.
Triple towing is not allowed and takes a CDL with doubles endorsement.
Passengers may ride in fifth wheel with audible or visual device with tow vehicle and safety glass and at least one exit can be opened from the outside and the inside. Passengers can not ride in travel trailer. Passenger may ride in pickup camper provided passenger can communicate with drive and exit can be opened from both interior and exterior, safety glass in window required. Seat belts are required.
Overnight parking in state rest areas is "as posted".
Towing travel trailers may not be allowed in snow areas. Contact the highway patrol before entering a snow area; chains may be required at any time. Trailers may be barred due to high winds, blowing sand, etc. Trailers over 20' may experience difficulty in negotiating hair pin turns on California State Highway 89.
